A BOY aged 16 has appeared in court accused of raping a ten-year-old girl as she walked home from school before strangling her.
The teen, who can't be named for legal reasons, allegedly attacked the girl in Exmouth, Devon, last Thursday.
The girl, who was not known to the boy, was said to have been returning home from school when she was allegedly set upon close to a popular play area.
She was found in a brook in a "distressed state" with cops called to investigate what they called a "violent assault".
The 16-year-old was charged with attempted murder and rape and today appeared at Exeter Magistrates Court.
Prosecutor Emma Lenanton said the victim was allegedly raped as she walked home from school and was later taken to hospital.
The boy was remanded into local detention accommodation and will next appear before a District Judge in Plymouth Youth Court on Thursday.
The girl "remains in the care of her family and health experts" and is being supported by officers from the force's public protection unit.
A Devon and Cornwall Police spokesperson said: "Officers from the Forces' Major Crime Investigation Team have formally charged a 16-year-old male in connection with a violent assault on a 10-year-old girl that took place on Thursday 4th October in the Marley Road area of Exmouth."
Cops are outside school gates in the area today to reassure parents their children are safe.
