After cessation of commercial whaling in 1987, the population is obviously expected to have increased. Only 300 – 400 animals have been taken for scientific purposes under special permit since 1987
while about 6,000 animals a year were taken commercially during the period of 1971 to 1986.
The scientific take represents 0.05% of the estimated stock size and has negligible effects on any population trend.
