Ito told Crain's that Ovshinsky was the biggest influence in his career.
Ito's parents were native Japanese. His father, Masat Izu, was a polymer chemist at the University of Waterloo
in Ontario when he was recruited to ECD in 1971 by Ovshinsky.
"Dad thought he'd be shrewd and said you have to pay me X amount of dollars. And Stan said we'll pay you twice
that much," Ito said. His dad had a variety of research and management positions, leaving ECD shortly before
Ovshinsky's ouster in 2007.
His mother, Momoko Ito, also was hired by ECD as an assistant to Stan and after a series of promotions ran ECD's
operations in Japan.
"I was probably 5 when I met Stan. We had just moved to the U.S. and Stan and Iris took us in as a family,"
Ito said. "They taught us about American culture and food. I learned to swim in his pool.
