ドナルド・トランプ米大統領は7日、ジェフ・セッションズ司法長官を更迭した。
トランプ氏はツイッターで、「ジェフ・セッションズ司法長官のこれまでの働きに感謝し、今後の発展を願う」と書いた。「正式な後任は後日、指名する」と続けた。
セッションズ長官は大統領への辞表で、「親愛なる大統領、あなたの求めに従い、辞表を提出します」と書き、自ら望んで辞めるわけではないと明示した。
「なにより大事なのは、私が司法長官だった間に我々が法の支配を復活させ、維持したことです」と長官は続けた。
ホワイトハウス関係者によると、トランプ氏が中間選挙について記者会見を開く前に、ジョン・ケリー大統領首席補佐官がセッションズ長官に電話で連絡し、更迭を伝えた。
アラバマ州選出の共和党上院議員だったセッションズ氏は、2016年大統領選の早い段階からトランプ氏支持を打ち出した1人。
しかし大統領は、司法省がロシア疑惑捜査をやめないことに苛立ち、セッションズ長官をこれまでたびたび公然と非難していた。
暫定的な後任には、長官補佐官だったマシュー・ウィテカー氏が司法副長官として務める。高校アメフトのスター選手から弁護士となり、ブッシュ政権で連邦検事に任命されたウィテカー氏は、かねてからロシア疑惑捜査を批判していた。
