U.S. stocks fell and oil rallied on reports of escalating tension in the Persian Gulf. The dollar advanced.

The S&P 500 Index erased gains after Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corp said it seized a British-flagged tanker in the Strait of Hormuz. Energy shares climbed with crude. Treasuries fell as the market leaned back toward a quarter-point cut in rates by the Federal Reserve this month.

In company news, American Express Co. slid as spending on cardholder rewards soared. Microsoft Corp. hit a record on an optimistic forecast, while Boeing Co. gained after a $4.9 billion charge on the grounding of the 737 Max jets met some expectations.
