His biological parents had swung him around so violently by the legs, they were broken in eight places and later he had to have a double amputation.
At four months he was ready to be discharged into the arms of foster carers Paula and Mark Hudgell - and is now carries their surname.
Brutal mum Jody Simpson, 24, and dad Tony Smith, 47, were eventually convicted of child cruelty and jailed for just ten years.
Paula, 50, of Kings Hill, Kent, is now campaigning for tougher sentences for attacks on children and she has hit out after shameless Simpson made a bid to be freed early from jail.
She told the Mirror: “Jody left her son close to death and now she wants sympathy. She can’t accept her guilt for what she did to her own child.
“By appealing to have her sentence reduced shows she has no remorse. Both his parents deserve to rot in prison.”
Paula knew very little about Tony’s background when she first met him, but her suspicions were raised at a meeting with his birth parents, who claimed his injuries were down to a “terrible accident”.
In truth, they were behind a series of brutal attacks on the little baby over a shocking ten-day period.
Their trial heard the vile pair even delayed seeking treatment for the baby for days because they were waiting in for a plumber to fix the boiler.
It revealed to the court for the first time that Tony had had both legs amputated due to an infection from his injuries. Jurors broke down in tears.
Paula says of her first meeting with the baby in February 2015: “Tony was a scrap of a thing with casts on both of his legs. He’d been admitted to hospital on the brink of death with lots of bone fractures.
“Doctors had done everything for him as his body blew up like a balloon fighting infections from thigh bone, lower leg, ankle, thumb, and toe fractures."
Paula and asset manager Mark took Tony home to meet their children Ben, 28, Chloe, 23, Ryan, 26, Kyle, 16, Jessica, 11, Jaden, ten, and Lacey, five.
